Single Season Outfield Assist Record

Chuck Klein

“One reason why I’ve been able to play baseball well is because it’s fun to me. Many players find it work.” – Chuck Klein

Chuck Klein, the strong-throwing right fielder for the Philadelphia Phillies, has the Major League record for assists by an outfielder in a single season (since 1893, the beginning of “modern-day” professional baseball). In 1930, Klein was credited with 44 assists from the outfield.

The only outfielder with 50 assists in a season is the Chicago (Cubs) team’s Orator Shafer in 1879. Speedster Hugh Nicol of the American Association’s St. Louis franchise was credited with 48 outfield assists in 1884.

Hardy Richardson with the National League’s Buffalo Bisons had 45 outfield assists in 1881, and Tommy McCarthy with the American Association’s St. Louis team had 44 outfield assists in 1888.
