Grover Cleveland Alexander, the only 4-time winner of pitching’s Triple Crown (Wins, Ks, and ERA), holds the Major League record for shutouts in a season, since 1893, with 16 for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1916. Jack Coombs of the Philadelphia Athletics (1910) and Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals (1968) recorded 13 shutouts apiece. And, Alexander also had the next best season’s total in 1915 with 12.

The highest number of shutouts in a season by a left-hander was achieved by the amazing Sandy Koufax in 1963 with the Los Angeles Dodgers with 11.
